The Tampon Tax

Hello Everybody!

So today's post is going to be a bit different to normal, but if you live in the UK then you should definitely read this.

If you didn't know already, in the UK sanitary products are taxed. This is at a lower than usual rate, but still taxed. Women are being taxed for essential items to deal with something that is completely out of our control! Not to mention the fact that lack of sanitary products has been known to damage health. If that didn't make you angry enough, it turns out that on the list of essential items are items such as helicopters and cake decorations. These so called 'essentials' carry a 0 percent tax rate while sanitary products have 5 percent. Women are being taxed for being women.

The petition to change this is currently on 185,000 signatures, it would be great if you could add yours.

Advice For New Bloggers

Hello Everybody!

I have been blogging for quite a while but to be honest I would say that I'm still far from an expert at it. When I started I had absolutely no clue what I was doing and have learned some things along the way. A comment on my natural makeup look post (and a lovely email from Kayleigh) asking for advice, made me think that I actually had loads of things to say! So here we go.

1. Think up a name

This isn't a massive deal but a catchy name for a blog is always good! My name Phoebe's Diaries came from the idea that my full name is actually Phoebe Davies so it sounds similar, and each post is kind of like a diary entry. I would say that you don't need to worry much about your url because if you are unhappy with it, you can always purchase a domain name (www. etc) at a later date. I am considering doing this soon :)

2. Join Bloglovin

This is a website which the majority of bloggers are on, and you can follow lots of blogs on there and people can also follow your blog. I love reading blogs from here as it is so easy. Be sure to add their widgets to your blog to link people directly there. You can get them here.

3. Have a good blog design

For a long time my blog looked very basic and I hated it but had no idea how to change it! If you are good at Photoshop, make a pretty banner and try to get your blog to look sleek and professional. And maybe google how to change your html to design your whole blog layout yourself! (However, remember to copy and paste it into a document before, in case it goes completely wrong). I am hopeless at this so I found a free template online. There are also many designs that you can buy if you want to - big bloggers will often have the link to their blog designer at the bottom of the page. People are more likely to read your blog if it looks good :)

4. Add the followers gadget

On 'Layout' there should be a Google followers gadget. Add this to your blog! This is another easy way, as well as bloglovin, for readers to subscribe to your blog posts and keep coming back to read more. I had no idea about this for absolutely ages haha.

5. Get inspiration

Read other blogs. Look at successful blogs such as Inthefrow, ZoellaThe Londoner and Deliciously Ella to get ideas. But make sure you post what you want to post about! That is very important.

6. Read and comment on other blogs

As well as looking at the most popular, find smaller blogs and read them too! There are many brilliant bloggers with a small number of followers who have great ideas. Commenting on their blogs helps people to know that your blog exists and means that you can all support each other. (But make sure to actually read it and don't just comment asking for a follow haha). Whenever I get a comment on a blog it makes my day :)

7. Have fun

Okay this is really cringy but only blog if you enjoy it. Post what you want to post about and don't feel pressured to buy hundreds of high end products to review if you can't afford it. I absolutely love my blog and posting on it is my hobby. If you want to make money out of your blog you can use Adsense or have advertising spaces on your blog but, seeing as I don't do either of these, I have no idea how this works. Blogging is a fun thing to do so I hope you enjoy it!

Do you have any tips for new bloggers? And if you are new here I hope this was helpful! Leave a link to your blog in the comments so I can check it out :)

My New Camera!

Hello Everybody!

The majority of the pictures I take on my blog are taken with my iPhone 5S, and some with my Olympus camera which was my first ever camera. I have had for quite a long time but I am not going to talk much about it as I think there are much better cameras available now.

My old camera is on the left and my new one is on the right: (Picture taken with my iPhone 5S)

My old camera and my phone are good but I was looking for a camera of brilliant quality. I did not want a DSLR as I wouldn't be able to use it, they are too expensive for me right now and not very portable. The camera I have chosen is the Sony a5000 which is around £250. This is a 'compact system' which means it can have many lenses but is smaller than a DSLR. It also comes with a tilted screen (if you love taken selfies or vlogs). Another thing about this camera is that it has a setting where you can send the photos you take to your phone via wifi (by downloading the free app "Play Memories") which is such a good setting because it means you can Instagram or upload the photos anywhere on the internet so easily which I love!

I am certainly no expert but for those that are interested, the lens it comes with is 16-50mm. This does not zoom in loads but is fine for everyday use. If you wanted to, there is a bigger zoom lens that you can buy for the camera.

These are some pictures I have taken with it.

Overall I love the quality of this camera, the wifi setting is super handy and it is such a convenient size. I will get a lot of use out of it and I hope the picture quality on my blog will get better as well haha :)

Another Haul (oops)

Oh no Phoebe not again!! At least this time they aren't high end...

First of all I bought this lovely Real Techniques brush. It is big and super soft with a slight point so I am planning on using this for my bronzer.

I am keen to learn the art of contouring (I know - scary!). So I bought myself this stunning palette from sleek in the shade 'Fair'. I love Sleek products, they are always very pigmented and the packaging is great quality.

I already have a primer but it is similar to a moisturiser so I thought I'd try this Maybelline one which is a clear silicone one (I think that is what this type is called haha). I have huge pores so I hope this will help.

Lastly, I left Boots and popped into the Body Shop. I have been considering this bronzer for ages as EssieButton on youtube absolutely loves it. It looks really nice so I am looking forward to using it (with my new Real Techniques brush haha).

I hope you enjoyed reading this post!
